Rafael Nadal has won his 8th successive Monte Carlo Rolex Masters title this afternoon, beating World No.1 Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-1.
The World No.2 also broke a seven match loosing streak to the Serb, going back to last years Indian Wells final.
Having not lost a set throughout the tournament, Nadal was in a good place going into the match.
According to the BBC, before the match Nadal said:
“To be in the final without losing a set, it means a lot to start another clay season with a final.”
Nadal started the match strong, breaking Djokovic twice to easily win the first set.
In the second set, the Spaniard came out firing, breaking Djokovic in just the second game.
Nadal continued to dominate throughout the set, breaking Djokovic in the fourth game before hitting a speed bump in the following game, loosing serve.
But with the World No.1 hitting an uncharacteristically high number of unforced errors (25, to Nadal’s 10), Nadal rallied back to earn himself double championship point on his own serve.
Hitting an ace the Spaniard won the match in just 78 minutes.
Speaking after the match at an on-court interview, Nadal said he was very happy to have won.
“I’ve always felt unbelievable here,” he said.
Nadal’s victory marks his first tour level win since Roland Garros 2011 and gives him a record 20 Masters 1000 titles.
Without a doubt, the King of Clay is back.
