Strictly Come Dancing’s Artem Chigvintsev will not dance on this week’s show due to an injury sustained last Friday.
Talking on Strictly – It Takes Two this evening, Artem said that he will not be dancing with his celebrity partner, Australian singer Holly Valance, this week, but hopes that he will be back next week.
Artem suffered soft tissue damage to his back whilst rehearsing last week. It was debatable whether he would even dance the Jive on Saturday nights’ show – he was taken to hospital during the dress rehearsal leaving Holly to practice on her own.
Brendan steps up
New Zealand dancer, Brendan Cole (who was voted off with his partner Lulu last weekend) has stepped up to dance will Holly. However, Artem will still be doing the choreography for the this weeks rumba.
Artem is quoted on the BBC’s Strictly website as saying he is grateful for all the messages of support he has received from fans, but is disappointed not to be dancing:
“Thanks to everyone for all the messages and tweets of support, it really means so much. I’m sad not to be dancing with Holly this weekend, but I’m grateful that Brendan is quickstepping in to fill my dancing shoes, and the two of them will be fantastic.”
Partner Holly added, “I’m obviously disappointed I won’t be dancing with Artem this weekend, but his wellbeing is very important to me, and Brendan is an awesome guy and we’re working hard to bring something new and exciting to this Saturday’s show.”
It is not the first time that Artem has sustained an injury on the BBC1 show. In last year’s Blackpool episode, Artem injured his neck while rehearsing the American Smooth with dance partner (and now girlfriend), former Coronation Street actress Kara Tointon. The pair went on to win the 2010 season.
